Carl Hickman

Senior Instructor - 4th Dan

We are shocked and saddened by the passing of Carl Hickman.

He passed away suddenly on September 17, 2022.

Mr. Hickman started training Wado-ryu karate in Yokohama, Japan in 1975 and attained a Shodan rank in 1977. Carl started training Ryuei Ryu Karate with Shihan Tomohiro Arashiro in 1992.

Carl has competed at all levels and encouraged his family to do the same. Carl and his wife taught karate at the Chula Vista Karate Club for over 20 years.

He is well known for his powerful mae geri and sneaky mawashi geri. When you had to do kumite with him, you knew one of those kicks would be coming your way.

He had an easy going nature, was hard working, a devoted family man, and confidence in himself that you can see in his daughters today.

We miss him dearly, but his spirit lives on inside and outside of the dojo.
